Book decisions

What to do with those books you will never read again

Donate them – When most people think about getting rid of any unwanted items that they no longer need, the first place they think of is St Vincent de Paul or the Salvation Army. And while both of these places are great, and do some excellent work for the community, there are plenty of other places that accept second-hand goods and the donations go to some very good causes. Organisations such as the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation, which helps indigenous children gain access to education through literacy, and Books for Lesotho, which takes the donated books over to students in Southern Africa are great examples of other places that are always accepting donations. These organisations, and many others like them are great causes to get behind, and you’ll feel like you’re really making a difference by giving them your unwanted books. Local libraries are also another great place to donate to, and they are often on the lookout for new and different books to add to their collections.

Give to a Community Street Library – In most big cities and suburban areas, you may stumble across little wooden houses full of books out the front a local school or community centre. These little houses are known as community or street libraries, and they allow the community to engage with each other through the donating and swapping of books. Most of them have a clear glass window at front and a door that opens and closes to allow people to come and go with ease, as well as being able to protect the books from the weather and any other external forces. As mentioned, you can leave your own books in the library, or you can take a book with you. This is a great way to get rid of your old books that you no longer want and gives others who may not be able to afford new books the opportunity to take them for free. The Street Library website shows you the locations of some of the community libraries in your local area, so you know where to go to donate.

Recycle them – Because books are made from paper, it is easy for them to be broken down and made into new items of a similar fashion and even be printed on again. Most old books are made from high-quality paper, and not made of mixed materials like that of a magazine or a catalogue. According to Planet Ark, a non-for-profit environmental foundation in Australia, paper can be recycled up to 8 times, and it can be repurposed into things like packaging, toilet rolls, and egg cartons, all of which can still be broken down fairly easy over time, and even reused again another time. There are plenty of recycling centres throughout most major cities in Australia that accept donations like books for recycling which are supported by Planet Ark. This is another great way of repurposing old and unwanted books to be used in a more positive an environmentally conscious way. They also sell the books that are in better condition at some of their repurposing centres, with the profits going to local charities and hospitals.

Sell them – If you’re a little bit strapped for cash, another thing you can do with your old books is to sell them. Bountye is a website that helps you find and sell second-hand and vintage goods online from multiple third-party websites. We live in an age where we are concerned with the mass-production of objects, we need to find solutions to try and reduce our carbon footprint significantly in order to continue to live happy and healthy lives. We’re always being told to reduce, reuse and recycle, and Bountye works hand in hand with this idea by repurposing old and unwanted items. At Bountye they “think buying second-hand stuff should be as easy as buying something new” and this is a great idea because if you don’t want something anymore, someone else may. They also have an app available on the App Store and Google Play, so you can do your buying and selling on the go.

Repurpose them - Although it goes against the grain for most people to defile an old and beloved book, there are many ways in which you can recycle your old and unwanted books and turn them into something completely different. One ever-popular project that uses an old book is the ‘book-safe’, in which you glue the pages of your book together and then hollow out the middle of it to use as a safe, which can store some of your valuables and hide them from unsuspecting guests in plain sight. Using an old hardcover book, you can also make some interesting bookmarks. All you have to do is cut off the spine of an old hardcover book and pierce a hole in one of the ends for a ribbon or some string, and you have a lovely custom-made bookmark. Also, this activity doesn’t destroy your book too much, so you won’t feel as guilty about doing this project compared to some of the others out there that use books. In saying that, both projects are a great way to repurpose the books that you once loved and allow them to continue to be used in a positive way in your home.

The Spiritual Gifts Handbook

The Spiritual Gifts Handbook
Using Your Gifts to Build the Kingdom
Randy Clark and Mary Healy
35191337
Two authors teamed up to bring an interesting approach tothe gifts of the spirit. Mr. Clark is an international healing minister and Ms. Healy is a Catholic Bible scholar. Each author's voice is heard throughout the book with their vision for what using your spiritual gift looks like.

The book was not what I had been hoping for. It definitely leaned in the speaking in tongues, Pentecostal direction. I was hoping for a look at how I could apply the spiritual gifts that I'd been given to my life. But the book felt more like a theology text book that a layman's handbook. I agree that our churches need more of an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and that the spiritual gifts are an absolute necessity in today's work of reaching souls. However, I'm not sure that I agree with a lot of what the authors chose to focus on. It had an almost spiritualistic slant that I found a bit different.
Some of the stories were interesting, but overall, I found the book too dry and slightly boring with a touch of condescending. This is definitely not what the other reviewers are saying, so it was clearly just my opinion. So if you want to dig deeper into the Bible and want another person's take on spiritual gits, this might interest you.

North
How to Live Scandinavian
Bronte Aurell
33785433
Numerous studies point to the general happiness of the Scandinavian people. So what exactly makes these northern European people so unique and content? The author has taken from her personal experiences and from research and has written an entertaining book that covers a lot of aspects, such as style, food, family, culture, and holidays. Full of colorful photographs and tons of information make this a fun and entertaining way to learn more about Scandinavia and it's people.

I absolutely loved reading this book. It was tastefully done with a tongue in cheek type of humor. I learned a lot and the writing made me want to someday travel to this part of the world. This would make an excellent addition to anyone planning to travel. Due to the cover it would also make an excellent coffee table book.

I Will Love You Forever

I Will Love You Forever
with Marianne Hering
Cori Salchert
35488736
Cori has suffered from extreme medical issues most of her life. At some points they kept her confined to bed. Her husband and eight children were there for her and helped keep the house afloat while she was trying to find answers. When Cori loses her job at the hospital as a counselor for parents losing their children to death, she's devastated. But what she didn't know was that it would open the door for her to care for an infant on hospice. Caring for this tiny baby knowing that she would soon be gone, changed their entire lives.

This book was not a thing like I was expecting. It was more of a memoir about the author, than about hospice babies. There is really only one child that was considered a hospice baby. It dealt with the author's health issues, those of one of her children, and the adoption of a special needs child. It also talked about her childhood and the death of her sister. So very little was actually about the one hospice baby she took in. But despite the misleading title and my general dislike of memoirs, I actually enjoyed the book and my heart was warmed reading about the hospice infant and how her own children reacted. If you enjoy memoirs or true stories, you'll really enjoy this inspirational book.

Hello Mornings

Hello Mornings
How to Build a Grace-Filled, Life-Giving Morning Routine
Kat Lee
34460638
Are mornings difficult? Does it seem that the morning starts of okay and then your schedule goes awry? Or is getting into a routine in the first place seem daunting? The author, now well known for her podcasts and founder of HelloMornings.org, took the information she's been sharing and put it together in a book for those looking to invigorate and change their mornings. The book has a Christian theme and gives the simple steps that the author found to work so well for her.

I am definitely one in need of help in the mornings. The book started out strong and was super inspiring. I talked about it with several of my friends while reading. The steps were easy to understand and implement. The author put personal experiences with scientific studies to prove her point. But despite the informative style of writing, it was interesting and I enjoyed reading it. The only negative was the last few chapters. I felt that they were necessary, but for some reason they were very dry and hard to get through. Turned this book into a 4.5, instead of a 5. But overall, I would still recommend it to my friends and family.

How to Window Box

How to Window Box
Chantal Aida Gordon and Ryan Benoit
35142712
Window boxes are common in areas where space is limited and can be used to grow plants indoors or out. This book delves into the process of setting up a good soil environment for growing all types of plants in a grow box setting. There are approximately sixteen sections that deal with different types of plants, soil conditions, fertilizers, and show various styles and types of grow boxes. The unusual rectangle shape of the book, the glossy pages with beautiful photography, and in depth details will have plant lovers falling in love with window boxes.

I loved reading through the book and think it would make an excellent gift or addition to a garden lovers library. The book has a high quality feel and taught me several things that I wasn't aware of in regards to window boxes. The photography alone sells the book. I really liked the step-by-step instructions on how to set up the box.

Follow Your Bliss

Follow Your Bliss Guided Journal
35869777
This particular journal features the art of Hello Angel. The theme is bliss. The pages are wide rule lined style and the paper is thick and acid-free. Almost every other page has a bright picture with rich, deep colors. There are flowers, animals and scenes, and mandala shapes. Each page has a hint of color corresponding to the pictures around it. The hard back cover makes it excellent for holding while journaling or drawing.

I fell in love with the beautiful pictures and tinted pages. Each lined page has plenty of room to journal or write down lists and thoughts. The thick pages didn't bleed through when I used a heavy marker or gel pen. This would make an excellent gift, but I'm going to have a hard time parting with it. These books can be found at all of the retail sites I checked. Overall, I would say this is an excellent journal and can't wait to use it more.

Falling For You

Falling For You
A Bradford Sisters Romance #2
Becky Wade
36347611
Willow is taking a short break from her modeling career to run her parent's bed and breakfast until the new manager can start work. She's burned out and she's hoping that the sabbatical will give her a fresh start. She doesn't expect to run into a former boy-friend, Corbin who not only broke her heart, but reminds her of all of her past mistakes. She also doesn't expect to be forced to work with him while trying to solve a mystery from decades ago.

I loved every aspect of this book. The characters were warm and inviting. The connection that the sisters have is special and heartwarming. The author did an excellent job of portraying the characters as flawed, but likable and inspiring. Their relationship with God was prominent and yet didn't come across as preachy and pushy. Several of the secondary characters were favorites as well. And the author did a great job of setting the scene for the next sister's story. This author never fails to write a story that has heart, forgiveness, family, and sweet romance. This story also has a side story with some suspense and drama that I didn't see coming, but really enjoy. Overall, another amazing book and I can't wait to read her next one.

Big Foot Visits the Big Cities of the World

Big Foot Visits the Big Cities of the World
A Seek and Find Activity Book
D. L. Miller
35873360
Big Foot is a shy and elusive creature that hides very well. So when he goes on vacation, it's very difficult to find him sometimes. Join Big Foot as he travels around the world. The book begins with some information about Big Foot - who he is, where he comes from, and some of his other names. The following pages are partially color and partially black and white drawings with various items, including Big Foot, for the viewer to locate. Before each puzzle is two pages of information about the city in the hide and seek. At the back of the book is the answer key, should the viewer become stumped.

My kids loved this book. And I really loved it too. There are 10 hide and seek puzzles and pages and pages of fun facts and information about the cities that Big Foot visits on his travels. The pages are colorful and the large size of the hardcover book make it easy for smaller children to hold and pour over. We all had fun talking about the cities that Big Foot was at and what it might be like to visit ourselves. This book would be excellent for a school library or used as an additional resource for curriculums.

A Chance At Forever

A Chance At Forever
Teaville Moral Society #3
Melissa Jagears
35086266
Mercy grew up in Teaville and suffered a lot of bullying because of her missing hand. But the worst bully of all was a boy named George. Mercy is now an adult and serving on the local school board when a teacher, named Aaron, applies for a position. She recognizes him as her childhood bully. Aaron claims to have changed, but Mercy is going to have to see evidence to believe him. When Aaron takes a summer job with her employer she's given the opportunity to observe him up close and isn't conflicted on what she sees.

This was my favorite by this author. I've enjoyed all of her books, but for some reason this one really spoke to me. The author did a great job of creating the tension and drama that the characters needed to develop. The two main characters, while flawed, were relate-able and engaging. And I fell in love with a couple of the orphans that were part of the story. There were a couple of sensitive topics that the author handled really well and the beauty of forgiveness and the ability to change by God's grace was so sweet and inspiring. The relationship between the several of characters was wholesome and romantic. Really enjoyed this story and can't wait to read the author's next book.

Big Foot Goes on Vacation:

D. L. Miller
35873359
Big Foot is a shy and elusive creature that hides very well. So when he goes on vacation, it's very difficult to find him sometimes. Join Big Foot as he travels around the world. The book begins with some information about Big Foot - who he is, where he comes from, and some of his other names. The following pages are partially color and partially black and white drawings with various items, including Big Foot, for the viewer to locate. This was a fun and informative book. My children really enjoyed it and I enjoyed reading the information pages and opening up a discussion with them. We will be passing the book along to their school library when we finish with it. This would make an excellent gift or book to take on a road trip. It would also make an excellent addition to any home or school library. Be sure to check out the other Big Foot books in the series.

Loved

Loved
This is a journal for a woman of faith who wants space to record her thoughts, write down prayer requests, or use for journaling. Each page is thick and lined. The pages are also filled with quotes from Christian people and scripture that could be used as prompts for writing. The cover is a hard cover with a soft, velvety leather covering it. The book ends with references pages about the people quoted in the book and finishes with a small thought from the creators of the book.

I loved the cover of this book. It would make an excellent gift. The pages are thick enough that I didn't have any issues with bleeding through or ghosting. It is a wide rule and I would have preferred a more college rule style, but I loved the thoughts scattered throughout the book.

Fresh Air

Fresh Air DVD
Often our lives need a breath of fresh air breathed into them. The speaker/author of this group Bible study experience has taken this concept and expounded on it with practical applications and Biblical principles to create a study that groups (or even an individual) can gain a blessing from.

This review is for the dvd. But it really doesn't work without the study guide, and works best if the book is being read in conjunction with the study materials.
The speaker on the dvd speaks clearly, is engaging, and sticks to the subject he's discussing. The lighting and camera angle are pleasant and the format setup of each lesson is easy to access. There are lots of texts that are provided on the screen. The speaker begins each session with some thoughts on the chapter being discussed and ends with prayer. Each segment is short and leaves room for the study guide discussion at the end. There are also videos included that are just for the group leader to view before each study. I found these to be very helpful in guiding the class. I used this in our small group and everyone enjoyed it enough that we've purchased another by this same speaker/author to use when we finish this one.

If the Duke Demands

If the Duke Demands
Anna Harrington
30364206
Miranda has wanted to marry Robert since she was a little girl. She's tired of waiting and hatches a plan to sneak into his bedroom and force the issue. But there is a slight problem with her plan. She ends up in bed with his older brother Sebastian. Both are shocked and Sebastian offers her a solution. He needs a wife. So if she helps him find one, he'll help her win his brother. But from the very beginning things do not go as planned.

This was a somewhat interesting read. The plot line was very predictable, so I knew the outcome, it was more about the journey to get there. I thought the main characters were annoying more often than not, but the story was amusing and I wasn't reading it for enlightenment. The author could have sped the story up and added more details. It felt like the whole story was all about the angst and if the characters had a good knock upside the head it would have been resolved within a few pages. There were some bedroom scenes for those who need to know that type of thing. Overall, it was an okay story that could have had a lot less angst to make it better for me. But I think readers of historical fiction will find it entertaining.

Real-Life Romance

Real-Life Romance
Rhonda Stoppe
35398528
The divorce rate is rising. The statistics for broken relationships, blended families, and single parenting is heartbreaking. But there is hope. This book highlights different types of romance and love that occurred when they allowed God to bless and direct their lives. Each chapter tells the story of a couple, how they met, and what made their romance so wonderful. The chapters end with some thoughts to ponder and some questions each reader can ask pertaining to relationships and marriage.

I really enjoyed this book. The author's writing style was fun and felt like listening to a friend talk about how she met her husband. Each story was unique and showcased the individuality of the people involved. I liked the questions and thoughts at the end of each chapter. I think this book would compliment a marriage study or seminar. This book would also make an excellent book for that single or newly engaged person that you might know. But as an "old" married person, I enjoyed it just as much and it was encouraging to hear so many wonderful stories of Christians who followed God's will for their lives when falling in love.

Amira Can Catch!
Kevin Christofora
35341848
Amira arrives in an American classroom as a refugee from Syria. Her classmates learn about life in a refugee camp and Amira learns about her new home in the US. The readers will learn all about baseball as they follow Amira and her classmates to the ball field for a practice session. Sprinkled throughout the book are facts about baseball history, American history, and vocabulary words.

My children weren't really in to this book. So after they finished reading it, I checked it out and asked them why. The book is some serious need of editing. I found several errors. The kids weren't fond of the illustrations and I agree with them. The author has a great concept, but it was a bit stilted in the execution. With some serious editing and a punch up of the illustrations, I think the book could have some serious potential. Parents and teachers will appreciate the bits of history and baseball knowledge.

Cowboy Stole My Heart

Cowboy Stole My Heart
River Ranch #1
Soraya Lane
34964918
Sam is known for his work with troubled horses. He's become somewhat of a celebrity, complete with tours and publicists wanting to work for him. But he really just wants to go home and work his ranch. So when he receives a message from Mr. Ford, who owns River Ranch, he's reluctant to go. But he can't turn down a troubled horse. When he arrives, he finds out that the horse belongs to the heiress of the River Ranch fortune, Mia Ford.

This was a different plot than the usual ones, so that was nice. The author did a great job of creating the tension and chemistry between the main characters. If you like lots of angst and drama in a relationship, then you'll love this story. The characters were well developed and brought a lot to the plot. I enjoyed the parts about the horses and how the main character worked with them. This has more bedroom scenes than some people might like in a romance. It got a bit steamy in places. The secondary characters were either vague or I felt like I was missing something from a previous book/story that I hand't read. But since this is the first book in the series, I'm guessing that more will be told in the next book. There were some parts of the book that really dragged out and then parts that rushed through. No One Ever Asked

No One Ever Asked
Katie Ganshert
35673517
Follow three women as they navigate the changes that are being forced upon them. A local school has lost it's accreditation and so some of the low-income children are being sent to the affluent school closest to them. Three women are faced with challenges to their family, their marriages, and their jobs as they try to understand medical, racial, and parenting issues. What these women learn will change their lives.

Wow! Ms. Ganshert has done it again. She takes on quite a few major hot points in this book and writes with heart, emotion, and inspiration. Her insight into the issues that our country is facing is insightful and thought provoking. It is labeled as a novel, but was inspired by actual events. I could feel the authenticity. The characters were well defined. I was pleasantly surprised because there were quite a few characters, but I wasn't ever lost or wondering which person I was reading about. Ms. Ganshert has a gift for writing emotions that jump out and engulf the reader. This book was no exception. This book pulled me in and wouldn't let go, even after I'd finished reading the last page. I couldn't stop thinking about it. I think everyone should read this, it's that good and that thought provoking. Overall, this book gets 5+ stars and I'd recommend it to everyone.

Brunch is Hell

Brunch is Hell
How to Save the World by Throwing a Dinner Party
Brendan Francis Newnam and Rico Gagliano
34848767
The authors are under the impression that the dinner party is in jeopardy because of brunch. People meet for brunch instead of communing over a dinner party. So the authors have written a book that combines advice, recipes, and tips on how to throw the perfect dinner party.

This is an interesting concept for writing a book on the perfect dinner party. Basically the authors trashed brunch (still not sure what their reason was - except maybe a reason to write a book), and then wrote a book about how to host the perfect party. The recipes are interesting, but I tried a couple and wasn't fond of them. My family hated them. The advice seems more geared towards a partying young adult and not a mature adult who wants to enjoy an evening with friends. Overall, unless you want a book for some laughs, I wouldn't recommend this book.

Every Body's Talking

Every Body's Talking
What We Say Without Words
Donna Jackson, Carol Goman
18353958
Nervous about a presentation or audition? Wonder why people think you're stuck up when really you are shy? Pick up this large, hardcover book to discover what your body is saying about you. And learn how to project the image you wish to convey by acting out what you want the outcome to be. Learn how to project confident. Learn about the different gestures we make and how they could be considered rude or have different meanings in different cultures.

This book is geared for children and mine loved it. But I also enjoyed it and learned some new things. The print is larger and the vocabulary fits for the intended audience. The pages are glossy and have plenty of brightly colored photographs and illustrations. The layout is conducive to learning with bullet points and cutouts. I think the book would be excellent for school libraries, home school parents, and family libraries. We will be donating it to our school once my children are willing to part with it.

Hearts Entwined
A Historical Romance Novella Collection

35086276
The path to love isn't always easy. Sometimes it comes with hardships and unexpected surprises. Follow these four couples as they learn that sometimes love is worth the risk and potential heartache. Each story is written as a stand-alone and is only tied with the other novellas based on the theme of historical romance. Each author uses a character or two from a series, but the series is not essential to understanding the story.

I really enjoyed this book. These four authors are on my favorites list and I've read the all of the series they pulled their characters from. So it was nice to get another little glimpse into what was happening. Each author brought her own style and flair to her novella and made it her own. I had a favorite, but loved all of them.  I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy historical romance, want to find a new favorite author, or want to meet characters from your favorite series.

2018 Journals

If you've been to my library, talked with me, or gone book shopping with me, than you know I have an obsession with journals. So I am super excited to share the line of 2018 journals from Fox Chapel Publishing. They have a wonderful selection of journals, adult coloring books, and more. I've yet to find a book that I don't like from them.
I will be writing a review every week or so about one of the journals. So be sure to check out each one and follow the link to get some of your own.

TangleEasy Lined Journal - Elephant
This particular journal features the artwork of Ben Kwok. The theme is wild animals. The pages are wide rule lined style and the paper is thick and acid-free. Every other page has a bright picture with rich, deep colors. Over half of the pictures can be colored in, so the journal serves a duel purpose.  Each page has a hint of color running down the edge that corresponds to the pictures around it. The hard back cover makes it excellent for holding while journaling or drawing.

I fell in love with the beautiful pictures and tinted pages. Each lined page has plenty of room to journal or write down lists and thoughts. The thick pages didn't bleed through when I used a heavy marker or gel pen. The drawings also inspired me to do a little doodling of my own. This would make an excellent gift, but I'm going to have a hard time parting with it. These books can be found at all of the retail sites I checked. Overall, I would say this is an excellent journal and can't wait to use it more.

Devotions for the Hungry Heart

Devotions for the Hungry Heart
Chasing Jesus Six Days from Sunday
Shellie Rushing Tomlinson
35398258
The author has written a devotional style book with twenty weeks of readings that reflect the author's journey to a hunger for God. She focuses on six themes that include Sharing, Praying, and Celebrating. The book is hardcover and includes a ribbon bookmark and recipes in the middle. The recipes are on glossy paper and have pictures.

My first thoughts were extremely positive when viewing this book. I loved the cover. The colors and design really drew my attention. It's definitely wrapped in a beautiful package. The recipes were an odd, but nice addition. They aren't unique or super complicated, but seem to be more in the style of comfort food. Each day begins with a story and ends with a scripture that the author thinks fits with her story. I didn't really get the devotional vibe. It was more like reading the thoughts of a diary that had a faith base. Overall, I think this is a neat book, but wouldn't use it as a devotional.

The Other Side of Beauty

The Other Side of Beauty
Embracing God's Vision for Love and True Worth
Leah Darrow
34460613
The author, a contest on America's Next Top Model, tells her story of pain and redemption. She is honest and real about her past and emotions that led her to the point of rock bottom. While at the bottom she learned about the other side of beauty, the beauty from within. She embraced God's ideal for her and has written this book to encourage others to see themselves as God sees them and not as the world sees them.

The book was interesting since the author wove so many stories, most of them personal, into the dialogue. I found several places to be slow or redundant. But since this wasn't really a topic that I felt resonated with me, at first, I had a hard time getting in to the book. But once I was about half way through, it picked up and I really felt her speaking to me. I had the book laying on my coffee table and a friend picked it up and read the first couple of chapters. She said the book really spoke to her and asked to borrow it when I was finished. So I know the book will speak to people who are dealing with body image issues. Overall, I think the book is perfect for someone with low self-esteem, those who view outward beauty as the most important thing, or those who are struggling with body image issues.
