When Chicks Hatch

When Chicks Hatch
Heather Randall
Five women all intersect as they deal with major issues that change their lives and bring them closer to their friends, family, and God. Each woman also learns who her true friends are. Since each woman is at a different place in her life, everyone should be able to find a character to relate to.

The book had a very chick-lit, contemporary feel. The author wrote a story that will capture the reader's attention and tells a tale of redemption and forgiveness without coming across as too preachy. Because there were so many characters the plot had a soap-opera vibe with many different intersecting stories being told at once. I'll admit to some confusion at the start, but quickly figured everything out and settled in to enjoy an adventure that included faith, romance, and some plot twists.
This was a sweet book by a new author. I look forward to seeing what she comes out with next.

The Generosity Bet

The Generosity Bet
Secrets of Risk, Reward, and Real Joy
William F. High with Ashley B. Mccauley
Generosity can be scary and confusing. There are so many ways and places to be generous. And yet what is the benefit to you? These authors have taken stories and experiences from other people and turned them into a book about how generosity can change lives. It changes the lives of the people who give and the people who receive. And often it changes the lives of the observers as well.

Each chapter is about a person who made the sacrifice to give generously and how it changed them. Filled with inspiring quotes, Bible verses, and true life experiences, the stories are uplifting and encouraging. At the end of each chapter is a section called Your Story. It asks questions that helps the reader make the story relatable to them personally.

5 Elephants

5 Elephants
Rob Laidlaw
Elephants are graceful and beautiful creatures. They have a huge capacity to love and nurture. The author has chosen five famous elephants and told their stories in this book. There is also a chapter filled with interesting facts about elephants. The book also has tips on how to become an elephant guardian, a list of elephant welfare organizations, and a glossary.

I love elephants so this was a really neat book for me. The photography was wonderfully done and really shows the elephants at their best. The author is a biologist, but the book was written for us laymen to understand. I read the book to my children (8 yrs and 5 yrs) and they loved it. The writing style is simple, but tugs at your heartstrings. I could definitely see this book becoming a great resource in a school setting.

Shield Up

Shield Up
How Upstanding Bystanders Stop Bullying
Marcella Marino Craver
Five friends enjoy spending time together and working at the theater after school. Each one has a different talent that they can put to use on or around the stage. But one of their group, CJ, decides to pick on a new student. At first the friends don't say anything. It would be too awkward. But when things get out of hand, the friends realize they need to step in and help the new girl and their friend CJ.

The book is written entirely in comic form. The comics are fun and fit in with what the author is trying to convey. The message is very spot on for dealing with bullying. My son read the book quickly and enjoyed it. The book sparked a conversation between us about the effects of being bullied. The back of the book has a note to readers that deals with different aspects of bullying and also offers additional resources. It was a great book for me to use to discuss the topic with my son, but I think all schools should have this book in their library as well.

Unexpected Christmas Hero

Unexpected Christmas Hero
Kathi Macias
Josie has the perfect life - a husband who loves her, two wonderful children, and a gorgeous home. But when her husband dies she realizes that their home is mortgaged to the hilt. She has no time to regroup before she loses her home and finds herself and the two children on the streets. Life literally becomes a day to day game of survival. But God places people in the her life that will show His love and change hearts.

The author has a talent for creating an emotional story. The subject of homelessness is often sad and depressing. But this story has an underlying theme of God's love and ends on a redeeming note. I don't usually like books that make me cry, but this one was worth it. It definitely made me think of how I could help not only the homeless, but anyone around me who might be needing to see God's love.

The Promise

The Promise
Beth Wiseman
Mallory was prevented from giving her cousin a kidney when she was a teenager. So she promised her dying friend that she would save a life when she was an adult and could make her own decisions. Her best friend's fiance convinces her to go to the middle east to save a young girl with cancer. Her friends and family try to convince her it's a mistake, but she is determined to save someone since she couldn't save her cousin.

The Prologue starts the book off with a bang. The author has a strong writing style that carries well with this plot. The author based this book on a true situation that happened to a friend. Knowing that this was based on a true story made it feel very authentic and scary. I can see this book easily becoming a favorite with a lot of readers. But it wasn't really my style. The book has some slow points. And the book didn't really seem to fit into the Christian fiction category. I felt that several of the religions weren't portrayed authentically or fairly. It's definitely not a book that I would recommend for younger readers.

Louie's Big Day

Louie's Big Day
Maria I. Morgan
Louie is very nervous. He's been purchased from the hardware store and tomorrow is the first day that he tries cutting grass. He doesn't know if he'll do a good job and he's always had his friends with him. Now he's all alone. But the next day proves that he's great at his job and also has a wonderful surprise.

My children enjoyed the story. The illustrations are realistic enough to catch the meaning of the story, but whimsical enough to capture the imagination of the children who are listening. As a parent, my favorite part of the book were the thoughtful questions at the back of the book that allow the readers to dig deeper and learn more about the meaning behind the story.

The Daughter of Highland Hall

The Daughter of Highland Hall
Edwardian Brides Book 2
Carrie Turansky
Katherine is ready to enter the London social season. Her cousin is her guardian and her rather abrasive aunt has taken it upon herself to get Katherine ready for the season. Everyone hopes that Katherine will make an advantageous match and live a life of luxury. But Katherine catches a glimpse of what it would be like to live a life in service for God and others. Now she's torn. Which direction should she go?

Regency or English historical fiction is one of my favorites. So I was super excited to read this book. The book started off slow and didn't really grab me at first. I wasn't aware when I picked it up that it was book 2, so maybe the first book would have set the story a little better and made it less confusing. Once I got into the book I enjoyed the characters and was drawn into the story. There were several things that didn't ring true to the time period, but for the sake of fictional license I ignored them. The messages of faith and trust that were woven into the story were insightful and thought provoking. They were the best parts of the book, to me. In summery, I enjoyed the story and will try another book by this author.

Princess Cupcake Jones

Princess Cupcake Jones Won't Go To School
Ylleya Fields
Cupcake doesn't want to go to school. So she comes up with a plan. But each time her mother thwarts her plans. Cupcake is really scared, but her mother reassures her that it will be fine. When cupcakes meets her teacher and classmates she feels much better. Maybe school won't be as scary as she'd thought. And having a new friend is pretty cool.

The rhyming text and colorful illustrations make for a really fun story. The author shows kids that it's okay to be scared, but new things can be really fun. This book would be perfect to read to any little one just starting school. My five year old daughter loved the story and the illustrations. She laughed at the antics of the little girl. The story is a great opening to talk to children about what their concerns might be with school.

The Long Road Home

The Long Road Home
Four Romances with an Enduring Pioneer Spirit
Judi Ann Ehresman & Naomi Mitchum
Story 1 - Mandy watches her husband walk away to work on the railroad, wondering if she should have told him she was pregnant. When she gets notice that he was killed in an accident she wonders how she is going to survive. But God sends a run-away slave with a the message of salvation. Deidre saves her financially by helping with all of the work and by helping provide an income. But most importantly she saves her spiritually.

Story 2 - Bess grew up in a brothel. But when one of the patrons "finds Jesus" she realizes there might be a way out of her former life. But old thoughts are hard to shake and Bess struggles with the concept of forgiveness and a new life.

Story 3 - Deidre ran away from a cruel master who had sold her husband and was getting ready to sell her baby son. She's found a wonderful home with Mandy, but she misses her husband. Will she ever be reunited with him?

Story 4 - Frederika wasn't happy about her family leaving Germany. She protests vehemently, but eventually steps up to the plate and takes over when neither of her parents are there to help her.

The first three stories are sweet, well written, and romantic. They all tie together to form a nice cohesive story about three woman who overcome difficulties to become strong women in Christ.
The fourth story doesn't fit with the first three and is by a different author. The feel of the story is completely different. The romance felt rushed. I'm sure that the author writes a great story. It was just didn't seem to fit with the first three stories. I would recommend this book for the first three stories alone.

Surprised by Love

Surprised by Love
The Heart of Sand Francisco Book 3
Julie Lessman
Megan is returning from Paris a completely different woman. She's lost some weight and gain some confidence. But she's hoping that her friendship with her best friend Bram hasn't changed a bit.
Bram is shocked when he sees the beautiful woman that Megan has become. His feelings for her are very non-best friend like. But he's made some commitments that might prevent him from following through on his new feelings.

I really enjoyed the double romance in this story. The author painted a beautiful visual as she told the story. There were times that I felt a little lost since I was coming into the story without having read the first two books. But instead of frustrating me, it made me want to check out the other books. The story was sweet, had a bit of drama, and had great secondary characters as well. I'll definitely be adding this author to my wishlist.

What is Wind?

What is Wind?
Robin Johnson
What exactly is wind and where does it come from? This small, informative book will help parents and teachers answer these questions. Readers will learn about air pressure, the effects of wind on plants and animals, and tools that scientists use to harness the wind. Each page is filled with colorful illustrations, charts, photographs, and fact bulletins. The graphics and variety to each page will engage and entertain children while helping them learn more about the science of wind. The vocabulary is simple enough and the print large enough that a young reader can read the book for themselves. Several bonus features include a wind craft for children to make, instructions for a weather journal, a list of books and websites for further study, and a glossary of wind words. This little book only has twenty four pages, but it packs in a ton of information. This book would be a great resource for schools and home school parents to supplement the science curriculum.

Lomelino's Cakes

Lomelino's Cakes

Simple instructions make amazing cakes within reach of the basic baker. The first 30 pages are full of detailed instructions on how to make your cake stunning. I loved all of the photography. The cakes were truly gorgeous. The instructions were simple and not intimidating to the amateur baker like me. But the end results looked amazing. I've got several of these cakes earmarked to try soon. This book would make a wonderful gift for that baker in your life.

Trading Secrets

Trading Secrets
Melody Carlson
Micah began writing to Zach when she was in the fifth grade. Because of her name, he assumed she was a boy, and she never corrected him. Now Micah is a senior and the opportunity for them to meet is here. She has to come clean, but she's afraid that it will ruin her friendship. And Zach has become her best friend, the one she shares all of her secrets with.

Somehow I missed that this was a young adult. I've read books by Carlson before and remembered enjoying them. This book was sweet and I think will really appeal to a younger generation. It was a quick read with very little drama. The relationship between Zach and his parents was not one that I've seen in the Amish books I've read in the past. It was definitely a different spin on Amish fiction. The book wrapped up neatly, but without a resolution between the friendship of Micah and Zach. Not sure if the author is leaving this open for a sequel or if this is typical of YA. It was a nice book, but did not prompt me to read her other YA books.

The Christmas Cat

The Christmas Cat
Melody Carlson

Garrison was raised by his grandmother when his parents were killed. But when he went to the mission field, his grandmother began collecting cats. She knew he was severely allergic, but she kept adding more cats to her home. When she passes away, Garrison finds out that her cats are in her will and he has to follow specific instructions to find them new homes. He's torn between wanting to follow his grandmother's last wishes and feeling less loved then a bunch of cats. Throw in some noisy neighbors, rumors of money, and lots of sneezing to make a wonderful Christmas story.

This was such a sweet, fun story. The author mixed a little bit of everything to make a small town novella that is great for the Christmas season.  There is a whole neighborhood of characters, but the author has given them enough definition that they don't get lost in the story. There is a little bit of romance and a whole lot of faith and love. I enjoyed the story and will definitely read more by this author.

Super-Cyborg Gaget Glove

Super-Cyborg Gaget Glove
A Mystery With a Blinking Beeping, Voice-Recorded Gadget Glove You Can Build Yourself
Bob Pflugfelder and Steve Hockensmith
Nick and Tesla are amateur inventors. When everything starts running haywire at the museum they have to race against time to figure out how to save science. Their two friends and an uncle, a scientist help them. As they try to figure out who is trying to sabotage the exhibits they add more gadgets to their glove to help solve the mystery.

Science and electronics come together in this story to create a fascinating and entertaining story for the young readers. The book will encourage children to look at science in a fun new way. The plot moves quickly and smoothly. The illustrations and graphics bring the story to life. The instructions for making the gadget glove and the secret message ink are included in the book. The instructions are simple and easy to understand. Readers will love getting involved with the story. The story is fourth in a series, but can work well as a stand-alone book.

Safe Haven

Safe Haven
The Peacemakers Book 3
Anna Schmidt
Suzanne trusted the wrong person and it ruined her journalism career. So when her former boss offers her a chance to redeem herself she jumps at it. She must go to Oswego, New York to write about the refugees that have come from war torn Europe as guests of the president. Theo is on his way to Oswego to meet his ant and uncle and hopefully bring them home. But government regulations and prejudice keep almost 1000 people practically prisoner. Suzanne and Theo work together to get these people the true freedom they need.

I've read book 2 in this series and enjoyed the writing style. The third book seems to have less suspense, but is still full of drama, family, faith, romance, and history. The author is able to tell a story that inspires the reader to care for the characters. She has taken a time period that has the potential for some depressing moments and has given it an uplifting and redeeming quality. I really liked how the couple resolved their love story - first with accepting each others differences and then with a compromise that turned out to be exactly what they both wanted.

What There Is Before There Is Anything There

What There Is Before There Is Anything There
A Scary Story
Liniers
Every single night a little boy says good night to his parents and then sees the same little monsters. And every night they say the same thing and then the ceiling disappears and a very scary voice begins talking to him. So every single night this little boy runs to get in bed with his parents. And each night they let him sleep with them one more time. The illustrations are cartoon style and slightly dark. The story and illustrations complement each other. The flow of the words is lyrical and children will love the cadence. The point of the story appears to be helping children get over their fears and nightmares. My eight year son loved the story and it sparked his imagination. It scared my five year old daughter and gave her nightmares. The book could easily become a favorite with many families, but parents should consider previewing the book before reading it to their children.

Trails & Targets

Trails & Targets
Dangerous Darlyns Book 1
Kelly Eileen Hake
Bea is the oldest of four sisters. It's her job to help her father take care of them since their mother is gone. But her father's idea is to host an afternoon showcasing their talents. This only succeeds in angering the local banker. But when two men, Miles and Greyson, ride through town Bea enlists their help. The men find themselves staying longer than they'd anticipated. Greyson can't help admiring Bea, but he fights his feelings since he knows he's moving on once he's finished helping the family.

This was a super fun story. The plot moved along quickly and kept me entertained. The characters were unusual, but very likeable. I especially loved the father and youngest sister. Even though they were secondary characters, the author gave them depth and unique qualities. She also did a great job of setting up the series and leaving the reader wanting more. The romance was sweet, but not over the top. There was more to the story than just the romance, such as drama, small town life, and messages about forgiveness and working together. I look forward to reading the stories about the other three sisters.

Christmas at Rose Hill Farm

Christmas at Rose Hill Farm
An Amish Love Story
Suzanne Woods Fisher
Bess is about to marry her friend Amos. But she's nervous and a little bit afraid. For some reason she can't get her first love Billy out of her mind. But Billy left years ago and she knows he's never coming back. A few weeks before the wedding Bess finds a very old rose bush in the greenhouse. Since she raises roses with her father it's rare that she finds one she doesn't recognize. So her father calls a rose rustler, someone who researches and finds heirloom roses. This man turns out to be her old love Billy. But he makes it very clear he's only here for the rose. Then he's leaving.

This was a fun little novella with touches of romance, drama, rose history, and a touch of the super-natural. I felt the author did a great job with character development for a novella. The story flowed well and was entertaining. The super-natural element that I mentioned was nicely done and while I guessed right away, added an interesting component.

Running Lean

Running Lean
Diana L. Sharples
Stacey is creative and passionate, in love with her boyfriend Calvin, and thinks she's fat. Calvin loves his motorcycle and his girlfriend Stacey, and is desperately missing his deceased brother. The two of them need each other, but neither one will realize the how far their love and friendship will be tested.

The author has taken the delicate subject of anorexia and written it for young adults. The story was full of emotion and drama. The characters seemed to be one dimensional and the story pivoted around the anorexia issue. There were some details that I felt could have been expanded on or where left out, but the author wasn't reaching out to my age group. So perhaps this is something that will not bother young adults. Parents should take the heavy issues of sex, drugs, eating disorders, etc. into consideration when getting this book for their child. They are real issues that teenagers deal with, but  might be a bit heavy for some children. All in all, it was a heavy subject with lots of drama, but could be very relatable to teenagers facing these issues.

An Amish Second Christmas

An Amish Second Christmas
Beth Wiseman, Ruth Reid, Katherine Fuller, and Tricia Goyer

Four stories by four different authors are all about Christmas. The stories don't seem to connect in any way except the Christmas theme. Each one is about second chances at Christmas time.

I enjoyed each story. They were sweet, romantic (except for the first one), and brought out the real reason for Christmas. My only complaint with the first story was that it felt like it might have been a middle book in a series. There were several details that I felt I had missed and the book ended like another book was following it. But it was still a nice and heartwarming story about forgiveness and family at Christmas. The second story was nice, but there were so many lies and miscommunication that I became frustrated with the two main characters. For a novella, I'd prefer something a bit less complicated. My favorite was the last two stories by Fuller and Goyer. They were great novellas without feeling rushed or incomplete when they ended. The characters were likeable and relatable, the romance was perfect and the stories ended well. All in all, it is the perfect Christmas book to read by a warm fire or to give as a gift.

A shy little boy moose is in love with a sweet girl moose. Can he overcome his shyness when his girl is kidnapped by an evil man? He talks to his super smart friend, Owl. Owl provides the perfect way for a very large moose to rescue his lady friend. Moose will become invisible.

The illustrations are precious. This book has quickly become a family favorite that we read often. The story is sweet and sends a message of never giving up and overcoming odds for love.

The Shocking Secret of a Guest at the Wedding

The Shocking Secret of a Guest at the Wedding
Victoria Alexander
Jack is given the shock of his life when he walks into a room and finds a man claiming to be his father, a father that he had thought dead for his entire 30 years of life. His mother had conveniently chosen to keep his father a secret his entire life. So the staid banker goes completely against character and makes the impulsive decision to go with his newly found father to England. Having grown up in America his entire life, Jack is completely confused by everything English. When he meets a young woman named Teddy, he enlists her help to tell him about his father's country. Both are keeping secrets, and both have plans that might come in the way of romance.

Despite the rather cheesy cover, I was looking forward to this book. The plot is fun. Who wouldn't love to find out they are in line for a title? The two main characters were a mixed bag for me. Jack had depth and a sense of humor. Teddy was annoying and made horrible decisions, tons of them. The secondary characters helped redeem this a little bit. The dialogue between the two main characters was very lengthy and detailed. I felt the author was trying to tell the majority of the story through the dialogue. And the ending was frustrating. But overall, looking back, it was a fun story and I'll try another book by this author since I did enjoy the plot so much.

365 Moments of Peace for a Woman's Heart

365 Moments of Peace for a Woman's Heart
Reflections on God's Gifts of Love, Hope, and Comfort
Bethany House
These devotionals are pulled from several previously published books. Each one is short, but packed with peaceful and convicting thoughts. The devotionals begin and end with a scripture. There is also a small written prayer that ties in with the devotional thought.

Each day is well written, aesthetically pleasing, and definitely falls into the category of peaceful. I've been blessed by several that I read and some of them presented thoughts on a scripture in a way I'd never looked at it before. The covering is beautiful. This is definitely a book that will be staying with me, but they would make excellent gifts as well.

Here to Stay

Here to Stay
Where Love Begins Book 2
Melissa Tagg
Autumn was all set to leave the small town of Whisper Shore when her mother gifts the family inn to her. But now she's been offered her dream job in Paris and can't wait to get out of town. The inn's financial problems are hopefully just a small issue that can be dealt with quickly. Blaze has traveled the world to escape his problems and is now home hoping to finally settle down. Can the two of them work together to make both dreams come true?

The characters in the book were relatable and fun. The emotions were real and honest. I enjoyed the story plot and the way the author wove the story of salvation and message of forgiveness into the story. She did a great job of getting the concepts across without being preachy. The romance was predicable, but sweet. I'll definitely be checking out future books by this author.

Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis

Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis
Carole P. Roman
Captain No Beard is a great pirate with a loyal crew. But he just might have a mutany on his hands if he doesn't reveal their destination. When he tells the crew what he plans to steal they have some misgivings. Can his crew set him straight?

The cartoon-like illustrations are fun and quirky. Children always love pirate stories and this one will be no exception. The author brings in a quick science lesson as well as discussions about stealing. Parents will love the lessons and children will love the illustrations and fun story. I read this book to my 5 and 8 yrs old kids and they enjoyed the story. It provided an opening for us to talk about the northern lights and do a bit more research. I wish that the author had provided some websites or additional information about them, since most children this age will have no idea what an aurora borealis is.

A Mom's Prayers for Her Son

A Mom's Prayers for Her Son
Praying for Every Part of His Life
Rob & Joanna Teigen
There is a special place in the heart of mothers for their son. As a mother, you might not understand your son. He doesn't think or act like you do. But he is very close to your heart and you want the best for him. These authors have taken lessons and prayers from their experiences as parents and written this beautiful book. Each chapter begins with several scripture verses that will tie into the prayers. Then a very specific prayer is outlined asking and talking to God about your son. Interspersed between the chapters are, A Mom's Story, where a mother will talk about her experiences with her son and how prayer worked for her.

The book is well laid out and easy to read. The subject matter is a serious one, but the content isn't heavy or dry. This is the type of book that can be read through, but also used over and over again as the situations arise. Prayer is an ongoing thing and this book will help with that. I appreciated the author's take on prayer and how she focused on the mother as well as the son. I would highly recommend this book for any mother with a son.

At Bluebonnet Lake

At Bluebonnet Lake
Texas Crossroads Book 1
Amanda Cabot
Kate has focused on her marketing career her entire adult life. Her goal is partnership in the small firm where she works. But when her grandmother, her only remaining relative, asks her to come and spend a month at a small resort in Texas, she can't say no. Her grandmother fondly remembers spending time there with her late husband and wants to visit it one more time before she dies. She uses her health as an incentive to get Kate to take the month off work. Kate finds a resort in various stages of decay, a handyman that isn't really an employee, and a peace she didn't know she was looking for.

If you love sweet romances, no suspense, and subtle Christian influences, than this is the perfect book for you. The author created a story that will make you smile, doesn't keep you guessing about the end, and subtly brings in points of faith and God. I enjoyed the story and will be looking forward to the next book in the series.

Tennessee

Tennessee
America the Beautiful
Barbara A. Somervill
Most people think of southern charm and country music when they think of Tennessee. While these two things are definitely a part of it, this lovely state has so much more going on. Tennessee is also known for its rich history, pleasant weather, delicious food, and agriculture. The author has pulled an incredible amount of facts and statistics together in a colorful and easy to read book. The Travel Guide section gives tips for exploring the state, by town, with mention of local museums, historical sites, or parks. The Project Room section is packed with fun ideas for school projects and tips and resources for students wanting to write a research paper. Drawings, photographs, charts, and more fill each page to make it visually interesting to students and adults alike. When finished, the reader will have learned about Tennessee history, climate, plant and animal life, and the people of Tennessee. The book would be an excellent resource for schools and home school curriculum.
