More Bears

More Bears
Kenn Nesbitt

The author is writing his bear-less book when he hears a voice "More Bears". He is reluctant to change his perfect little story, but the voice is insistent. Eventually he ends up with a story so full of bears that he can't keep track of them all.

The writer clearly has the gift for reaching children. My kids are in love with this book. But I'll admit that it's one of my favorites too. The story is hilarious, the names for the bears are funny, and the ending is perfect. The author and illustrator worked well together. The illustrations tell the story just as much as the words do. Definitely a book that has landed in our top favorites list for many reasons.

A December Bride

A December Bride
Denise Hunter

Layla desperately needs a date to her cousin and ex-fiance's wedding. But her ex-fiance's friend, Seth, isn't exactly who she had in mind. At the wedding some things are said and Seth and Layla find themselves accidentally engaged. When Layla realizes it will help her business she begs Seth to let the engagement stand for just a few days. But days can turn into weeks.

The author did a great job of making the story seem whole, even though it's a novella. The characters are fun and likeable. The story was charming and Christmasy. If you haven't read anything by this author, check out this little novella and get a taste for her sweet romantic stories. One thing that was left out of this story that is prevalent in the author's other books is the Christian element. I didn't really feel like I was reading a Christian fiction. Everything was clean, but their faith was left out of the story. Still a great story and when writing a romantic novella, only so much can be put in before the books becomes full length.

Organizing Your Prayer Closet

Organizing Your Prayer Closet
A New and Life-Changing Way to Pray
Gina Duke

Prayer can be confusing at times. Some people keep journals, some people follow scripted prayers. But is there a correct way to pray? Is there a way to pray that truly connects us to God? The author has done an amazing job of simplifying the process of prayer journaling while showing the reader how to grow closer to God through prayer.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing is simplistic enough to be read by someone at any stage of life. But it has depths to it that were greatly appreciated. The actual book is only about 100 pages. The back of the book is filled with journal space in the format the author laid out. It is thoughtfully laid out and would be a benefit to anyone wanting to step up their prayer life.

Dear Mr. Knightley

Dear Mr. Knightley
Katherine Reay

Sam, a foster child, has been in the system for years. Before she entered the system, she lived with her abusive and dysfunctional family. As a result, she has retreated into the classics. She can't seem to figure out how to relate to the world, so she uses quotes from books to portray how she feels. Her strange and aloof behavior alienate any potential friends and eventuate the loss of her job. Her mentor at the foster home tells her about a grant to further her education. The only requirement is that she write anonymous letters to the benefactor. And this begins her journey into the real world.

The author used Daddy Long Legs as her muse for this book. Since I've read DLL, I knew what was going to happen. But somehow this didn't lessen my enjoyment. I've read all of the negative reviews for this book. And while I could probably agree with a lot of what they say, somehow that didn't matter with this book. I loved it. I loved the throw back to an old childhood favorite. I'm a huge Jane Austen fan so I loved the quotes thrown around throughout the book. I'm a runner, so that part resonated with me. The story has light, unbelievable parts and deep, heart wrenching bits. This is a book that will keep bouncing around in my head for quite some time. It's romantic, convicting, heartwarming, dramatic, and full of fantasy. It has everything and somehow it touched me. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.

Closer

Closer
52 Devotions to Draw Couples Together
Jim & Cathy Burns

This book was written with two thoughts in mind. Those that pray together stay together. But we don't always have time to spend an hour with our spouse every day. So the authors came up with a book that can be read every day if you are that couple. But for the rest of us with crazy busy lives can take this book one chapter a week. Every devotional starts out with a Bible verse and story that relates to the topic. It ends with two sections called "Faith Conversations" and "A Step Closer" that give suggestions and topics the couples can use to learn more about each other and be drawn closer to each other and God. Each chapter touches on things that are relevant to the things couples are facing today.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I loved it so much that my husband and I will be starting it this week. We have crazy busy lives and have often felt guilty for not spending any time spiritually together. This book takes the guilt out of that and provides an answer. The chapters are short enough that my husband won't balk at participating. The questions are probing and deep, but not too mushy for the guys. I, like the author, think this is a great starter devotional for those who are just starting that quiet time together or for those who are too busy to fit in a personal quiet time as well as a couple time.

A Marriage in Middlebury

A Marriage in Middlebury
Anita Higman

Charlotte turned down Sam's proposal years ago when he asked her to marry him. She thought they'd moved on. But when he walks into her tea shop years later she instantly realizes her feelings are still there. But being introduced to his fiance was not what she had envisioned. Now things are getting a little crazy around the town of Middlebury and her friends are partially to blame.

Slow moving, summer read is what came to mind when I finished the story. Most of the plot was predictable from the very beginning. But this didn't lessen the entertainment value or the life lessons the author presented. I enjoyed the story. It was a nice change from some of the high suspense I had just finished. In fact, the book reminded me a lot of the Mitford series by Jan Karon that I read several years ago. The author focused on forgiveness, second changes, and Christian love. I would definitely read another book by this author.

A Dog Named Tulip

A Dog Named Tulip
Maryn and Anna Joseph

Jessica loves giving her mother presents for Mother's Day. But this year she'd like to give her something extra special. While out picking tulips for her mother's bouquet she finds a little puppy. This puppy will make a perfect gift for Mother's Day.

Written by two sisters, this delightful little story will entertain young children. The child-like illustrations compliments the creative writing from these two young authors. My children enjoyed the book and have asked me to read it to them several times. We will definitely be keeping this book.

Home For Christmas

Home For Christmas (A Short Story)
Lia Fairchild

When a beautiful waitress catches Stephen's chair as he is about to fall, he can't seem to catch his breath. The first time he saw her he was torn between embarrassment and brain freeze. So he goes back to the bar to see if he can catch a glimpse of the beautiful Ali and this time make his tongue work enough to ask her out.

This is, like the title suggests, a short story. But it was a sweet and heartwarming little package, just perfect for Christmas. While I was disappointed that the story ended so quickly, it was such a fun little read that it was definitely worth it. The little plot twist at the end was good too. If you haven't already read books by this author, check out this little story to get a taste of her fun writing style. I've read most of her other books and really enjoy them.

Merry Ex-Mas

Merry Ex-Mas
Life in Icicle Falls
Sheila Roberts

Cass is looking forward to an engagement announcement from her daughter. But when it comes she's unprepared for the compromises she's forced to make so her daughter can have the wedding of her dreams. Her friends are not having the best Christmas either when it comes to relationships. Can these friends find a little Christmas cheer and goodwill or will this be a very miserable Christmas?

The story was entertaining and has some great Christmas messages about trust, friendship, and forgiveness. I enjoyed reading the story and the romantic parts were sweet. I have read one other book in this series and enjoyed it, if I remember correctly. But I kept getting lost with so many characters being thrown into the mix. I think, due to the large number of characters, that these books need to be read together. It will help the story stay more connected in the readers mind. But overall, I enjoyed the story and would read more by this author.

God's Little Princess Bedtime Devotional

God's Little Princess Bedtime Devotional
Sheila Walsh

A book filled with Bible verses, stories, and age appropriate talk is just perfect for one of God's little princesses. Each devotional has a Bible verse to tie into the topic that the author is presenting. After the devotion is a section called Good-Night Giggles and Grace. This section helps the little reader/listener to be able to apply the topic in a way that is relevant. It ends with a sweet prayer.

My five year old daughter loves this book. The bright pink glitter and jewel covered crown caught her eye. The charming illustrations fill every page. The devotionals were clearly written  with little girls in mind. My daughter was able to grasp each one I read to her and they provided an opening for more conversation. This book is definitely a keeper and I would highly recommend it for any little girl.

My Grandparent

My Grandparent
A Life & Times Journal for Grandchildren of All Ages
Dick Edwards & Korinn S. Hawkins

If you still have your grandparents with you, then you have access to a piece of history. Grandparents were born in a time that is very different from ours. As grandchildren we are the keepers and preservers of history for our own grandchildren. Designed in a journal format, the book takes the grandparent and grandchild on a journey to learn more about their family history. Questions range from pets and hobbies to more serious questions about relationships and challenges.

Any family member can use this book to reconnect and learn more about their family. Thoughtful questions and journal style layout make it easy to use. I'll be getting a second book so my children can have one for each set of grandparents.

Sabrina's Man

Sabrina's Man
Western Justice Book 2
Gilbert Morris

Sabrina is a spoiled rotten rich girl with nothing to do but spend money and go to parties. But her life changes when her little sister is abducted. Sabrina must find her sister and return her home to her parents. She enlists the help of an ex-conman, Waco, who knows the country. Can she live with the consequences of her actions and be able to find her sister alive?

I'm a fan of this author, but was disappointed with the first book in the series. This book was slightly better than book 1, but still lacked the suspense and character depth that I recall from his earlier books. The plot jumps between the two main characters until they meet about half way through the book. With Sabrina it seems to be mostly filler trying to explain why she's a spoiled princess. Several things seemed a little off to me.

1. The father let his eldest daughter go find her sister. No respectable man would allow his daughter to go unchaperoned out west. Why didn't he join her when she first left instead of almost at the end of the story?
2. The main male character, Waco, seems very shallow in his love for Sabrina. The author portrays him as the grunt and not very smart in the beginning and all of the sudden he is smart enough to plan a capture. It just doesn't come together well.
3. The ending seemed really, really rushed. I would have been very skeptical about everything if I was Sabrina. But she seemed totally ok with the sudden change in feelings. Just too rushed for me.

While it was enjoyable to quickly read through the book, I didn't feel the suspense or romance that I expected to get from this book. Maybe my expectations were too high due to my fond memories of reading the authors books as a child. But I have been disappointed with the series so far.

He hears a scratching noise and goes to the door to investigate, but no one is there. He keeps hearing this noise, but can't seem to find who is making the scary sound. The Gentle Parent

The Gentle Parent
L.R. Knost

There is a huge controversy going around among parents and parent educators. How should children be disciplined? Some are firm believers in letting children lead while others follow the old school methods of "sparing the rod, spoiling the child". The author pulls from her personal experience as a mom of six children to write a well written book on her views of parenting. She advocates using a gentle method that involves no spanking, time-outs, or lectures. Practical advice and suggestions are sprinkled throughout her book.

I finished the entire book and am still unsure how to rate it. I completely agreed with quite a few things she talked about. But I also strongly disagreed with a couple of things too. As a mom of only two children, I'm certainly  not an expert. And the author does mention getting to know your child, so that you know what works, since each child is different. But some of her methods or ideas just don't follow the parenting philosophy I've adopted as a mom. Her focus on the positive instead of the negative approach is what would sell me on the book. It inspired me to be more positive as a mom and for that reason alone I would probably recommend the book. Just remember that everyone is different and not everything will work with your children or for your family.

The Table Sets Itself

The Table Sets Itself
Ben Clanton

Izzy is finally allowed to set the table all by herself. She learns the proper place to put each of her friends. But after setting her friends in the same place every night for what seems like forever, she decides to change things a little bit. But Izzy's parents are not thrilled with the new places and make everyone move back into their proper places. Dish and Spoon decide that they will run away instead of going back to boring. The rest of the story centers around Izzy and her friends missing Dish and Spoon and anticipating the mail every day. But eventually everything returns to normal and everyone is happy.

Children will love the story filled with jokes, colorful illustrations, and creative writing. The plot is told from a child's perspective and filled with whimsy and fun. The ending was a neat little twist that will have children laughing. Both of my children enjoyed the story and learned more about table settings in the process.

The Snowman Maker

The Snowman Maker
Barbara Ward

Ellie is very concerned about her husband Ben. He seems depressed and isn't talking to her. Since this is out of character for her husband, she begins to worry. She's also slightly concerned about her children and some of the decisions they are making about their future. Can Christmas bring the miracle they all seem to need?

The imagery of the story places the reader in a Christmas wonderland and brings the holiday alive. The story, while predictable and a bit cheesy in places, was so heartwarming and enjoyable. It's a great book to curl up beside a warm fire with. Without giving any details away, I also appreciated the author's ability to put a positive spin on the mother giving her child up for adoption. So often the birth mother is cast in a negative light. So I really enjoyed this plot with a loving mother and a difficult decision.

Stones for Bread

Stones for Bread
Christa Parrish

Liesl owns a bread shop in a small town in Vermont. She, along with her eclectic crew, make bread and soup every day for the restaurant. Liesl gets her passion for bread from her mother who passed away when she was a young girl. But before she died, she passed on her knowledge and a starter that had been passed down for generations. Liesl feels safe in her cozy little bakery kneading bread. But life butts in and rearranges everything she thought she knew. Liesl must put the pieces back together and decide if she has room for faith and love.

The story was such a mixed bag for me. The writing was wholesome and filling. But at the same time it was dry in sections. The author wove theology, bread history, and recipes amongst the story and it really felt disjointed to me. I enjoyed the romance and the life lessons woven throughout the story, but I never felt a connection to any of the characters. I really had to work hard to get through the story. It's a different style of writing that will definitely appeal to some readers. Unfortunately though, I wasn't one of them.

Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe

Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe
A Daily Guide to Scripture-Based Prayer
Sharon Jaynes

Our husbands are not only a major part of our life, they are a part of us. When God told the husband and wife to leave their family and become one, He intended a beautiful marriage of two lives becoming one for Him. This book takes every aspect of the husband's life and breaks it down into different areas to pray. The beginning chapters talk about the importance of marriage and prayer within that marriage. It also guides the reader on how to use the book. The next 30 sections are divided up into days with subjects to pray for your husband. The last few chapters cover more ways to prayer for your husband and a reflection chapter.

I really enjoyed reading through the book. The author uses a lot of scripture and also pulls from her experiences to write the book. It's a wonderful book for any wife to have, but more importantly to use.

Alexis Cool as a Cupcake

Alexis Cool as a Cupcake
Cupcake Diaries
Coco Simon

Alexis and her three friends run a cupcake business. They are also dealing with the stresses of being in middle school. Alexis loves her job of running the business. Her friends are more than willing to let her take on all of the financial part while they just bake the cupcakes. But Alexis wants to be cool and fit in at school. And being the boss of her friends is not her idea of cool. So Alexis decides to take a break from business and see if she can improve her coolness rating. But the chaos that ensues has her wondering if maybe she should take her old job back.

The author did a great job of portraying the reality of middle school, while still creating a fun and entertaining story. Young readers will be able to relate to the girls and understand their desire to be cool. The author also addressed the boyfriend issue and handled it well. The doodle style of illustrations at the beginning of the chapters is whimsical and fun. At the end of the book are two puzzles and a list of the other books in the series.

Betty & Veronica

Betty & Veronica
Elena Aitken

Addy and Roni are best friends. They are as much family as they are friends. So when Addy gets the same type of breast cancer that killed her mother, Roni promises to stay with her through everything. Addy names her boobs and it's Veronica that is taken off. But she also likens the comic friends to her friendship with Roni.

This is a novella about two best friends enduring something together. This story really hit home with me because of several close friends and family who've had breast cancer. The author did a great job of conveying true friendship and the difficulties of cancer in a short story. While it made me cry, it also made me want to go read more of her books.

How I Met My Spouse

How I Met My Spouse
Reminisce Magazine

These precious little stories were pulled from the Reminisce magazine. Readers would write about how they met their spouse and turn the stories into the magazine to be read in a future issue. The book is only 65 pages, but is well worth the read. Some of the stories are only a paragraph long, but they are fun and heartwarming. It definitely took me back to a time when love was enduring and lasting. A real treat for those wanting to reminisce about the old days or learn about what real love is like. Would definitely recommend for a fun, romantic read.

The Alaska Brides Collection

The Alaska Brides Collection
Tracie Peterson, Mary Connealy, Cathy Marie Hake, Kathleen Y'Barbo

The gold rush brought many people to Alaska's frontier in search of adventure, wealth, and a new life. These five stories are about the men and women who braved the cold and hardships to make a life in the frozen tundra. Filled with love and romance, each story takes a different member of the family and tells their story.

I really enjoyed reading each story. Each one was a bit different because of the different authors, but they all tied in well together. The authors wove the story of Christ and salvation into each story without it coming across as preachy. The romance was sweet and heartwarming. I had favorites and one of the stories was a definite least favorite. But only because I don't care for the "love lost and found again many years later" type of story. The story itself was well written. I'm a fan of most of these authors and enjoyed "meeting" some new authors.

The Acquittal

The Acquittal
A Guilty Parties Novel
Pat Simmons

Dr. Rainey Renolds appears to be at the top of the world. His career is great, he has amazing friends and family, and he's financially secure. But with a nasty break up in his past, a father in prison, and some family issues, he's feeling anything but great. He also can't get a certain African beauty by the name of Josephine off his mind. She turned him down over a year ago and he still can't get her out of his system. A seemly sudden decision to go to Africa with the Doctors Without Borders sends him on a spiritual and emotional journey that he didn't expect.

This isn't my usual style, but I'll try anything once. I'm so glad that I did. The story was fun and the writing style is unique. The author has a no holds bared approach to salvation that is refreshing and eye opening. The characters were entertaining and realistic. I enjoyed reading about the history of Ghana and learning more about the customs and worship styles that they have there. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Christmas Bliss

Christmas Bliss
Mary Kay Andrews

Weezie has a bit more on her plate than a typical wedding. It's her wedding and her maid of honor is also about ready to get married. And did I mention that the groom is not in town? Can Weezie get her groom home, her maid of honor's issues settled in time for the baby to arrive, and her mother under control before the wedding is a complete disaster?

This book screamed southern chick lit. The characters were crazy, over the top, and fun. The mishaps were sometimes so out there, but added to the zany feel of the story. The book is part of a series, but came together well for a stand alone book. There were a couple of things I felt a bit lost on, but all in all it would work well by itself. If you like southern charmers or zany chick lit, than pick up this book and enjoy a bit of Christmas.

Captain Awesome

Captain Awesome vs. The Spooky, Scary House
Captain Awesome No. 8
Stan Kirby

Eugene and his friend Charlie have formed a super hero club after their favorite super hero. Eugene is Captain Awesome and his friend Charlie is Nacho Cheese Man. Their jobs are to get rid of all of the evil, bad guys in their town. They found a scary, spooky house that is the perfect house for their super hero club to take on. Can they figure out what the scary sounds and sights are coming from the haunted house? And who is the mysterious super hero that saves them?

The story flows smoothly and quickly. Young readers will appreciate the suspense and fun plot. The black and white pencil illustrations on every page are age appropriate and fit perfectly with the style and story line. The clues in the story are well placed and the vocabulary is right on target for the age of the intended audience. My seven year old son read this book and loved the story and illustrations.

Return to Me

Return to Me
The Restoration Chronicles Book 1
Lynn Austin

Iddo had spent his adult years living in Babylon and eagerly anticipating the return to his home in Jerusalem. When the king announced that any family could return if they wished he began preparations. He was unprepared for how many of his family would choose to stay. Only his grandson, Zechariah, was willing to join him and his wife, Dinah, as they headed back to their homeland. When they arrived, they found the local people unwilling to share their land. What began as an exciting journey, quickly became full of lessons in patience and faith.

I'm not usually fond of Biblical fiction. But decided to give the book a chance. The story was a bit slow in places. Several of the characters were so frustrating at times that I wanted to give them a good shake. But I also learned a lot about the culture and experiences of what happened. There were several things that I felt really opened up my understanding of the story. It also sent me back to the Bible to read the story again. So that was a win. It's not a light fiction book to be read for fun. But if you are willing to really spend some time, it can be an enriching read.

Searching for Someday

Searching for Someday
Jennifer Probst

Kate is running a very successful match making business with her two best friends. But somehow she can't seem to find the perfect guy for herself. Enter the very irate brother of a client and Kate finds herself with a potential soul mate. It's too bad he isn't her type and she doesn't date her clients.

In a spin-off from the "Marriage to a Billionaire" series, the author tells a funny and entertaining story about enduring love and magic spells. The people in the author's stories are always full of character and true to life. This story was no exception. I really enjoyed the interaction between the main characters. The friendships between the owners of the business was heartwarming and refreshing, while still being hilarious and entertaining. Probst writes books that are so fun to read that I picked up the next book w/out even reading the back.

A Slight Change of Plans

A Slight Change of Plans
Dee Ernst

Kate is finally ready for some changes in her life. Her husband has been dead for 8 years. Her children are no longer living at home. She has decided to downsize her home and start dating again. But despite all of her plans, Kate finds herself in the middle of chaos that wasn't even close to her plans. Thankfully she's learning quickly to roll with the changes and find her new normal.

A very entertaining read that will interest the younger generation as well as those of us a bit older. The author weaves subtle humor, real life situations, and a fun writing style together to make a very enjoyable book. It gave me the feeling of a mature chick lit.

To Know You

To Know You
Shannon Ethridge and Kathryn Mackel

Julia's son young, Dillon, is dying. His only hope is to have a liver transplant. But non of their friends of family have been a match. So he's slipping away while they wait on the donor list to supply them one. Julia's husband Matt convinces her to look up her older daughters that she gave up for adoption many years ago. It's a journey that is fraught with hard decisions, miracles, and heart wrenching revelations.

The authors have done a great job of taking a difficult situation and not only making it interesting, but also applying so many heart lessons. The story of salvation is prominent throughout the story. There are quite a few different stories going on in the book and the authors use flashbacks and different POVs to tell the story. I enjoyed the story, and also felt I learned some things while reading. There are discussion questions in the back of the book. Based on the depth and topics covered in the book, I would say this a great book club book.

He wouldn't normally care, but a teen idol has promised to coach the winner of the contest. Zeke would love the chance to meet her. Zeke is beginning to get really stressed when he happens upon a discovery. His dog is not very smart, but he mimics everything Zeke does. So Zeke decides to use his dog in the talent show.

Grade school children will love the humor, black and white illustrations, and entertaining story. Almost every page has an illustration that ties in well with the story and had my son laughing throughout the book. The book is written with larger print and age appropriate vocabulary, making it the perfect book to encourage the reluctant reader. At the end of the story are discussion questions, vocabulary words, a cool experiment, and the link to a really fun, interactive website for kids. My son is in second grade and loved this story.

Landmarks

Landmarks
Turning Points On Your Journey Toward God
Bill Delvaux

The author came to a point in his life that he defined as a landmark. He shares this and other landmark stories and the lessons he learned from them. His hope is that all Christians will make the right choices and trust in the right one when coming to these same landmarks.

The book was very entertaining as far as keeping my interest. While I couldn't relate to several of the nine landmarks, I did enjoy the stories and personal experiences that make up most of this book. It appeared to be more of a memoir of the author's experiences that he added life lessons to. This will appeal to the reader that doesn't enjoy the drier theological books and would prefer something in story form.

Heaven For Kids

Heaven for Kids
My First Bible Reference for 5-8 Year Olds
Ed Strauss

Heaven is often a hard concept to grasp. Grown ups talk about it, but what and where is it really. The author takes children on a fact finding mission to discover everything the Bible has to say about heaven and what it is like.

Glossy pages, bright photographs, and age appropriate vocabulary will draw children into learning about heaven. Even adults will enjoy a refresher with all of the fun facts the author has pulled together. My only issue was one of theology. This does not detract from the book and is more of a personal issue than anything negative about the book. I would recommend this book to anyone with a child who wants to know all about where Jesus lives.

Bountiful Blessings Cookbook

Bountiful Blessings Cookbook
Taste and See That the Lord Is Good

Life is full of blessings. Some of the first ones that come to mind are family and food. So the creators of this cookbook have put together over 700 easy-to-prepare, home-style recipes. Each recipe is more traditional in style with easy to find and prepare ingredients. The idea behind the book is to encourage family interaction over great tasting food.

The unique style took a little bit to grow on me, but now I really like it. The book appears to be sideways. So all of the recipes in the book are "sideways" on the page. This allows for about 3 recipes per page and works really well. I also like the home cooking style of the recipes. They are simple enough for me (an adequate cook) to make, but nice enough to make for guests. Considering the sheer number of recipes, there should definitely be something for everyone. Will be adding this to my collection.

The Brides of Chance

The Brides of Chance
The Chance Brothers Journey into Romance in Six Historical Novels
Kelly Eileen Hake, Tracey V. Bateman & Cathy Marie Hake

Six orphaned brothers all live and work together on a ranch in California. These six books are put together in one large book to tell the story of their lives and romances. Each book is the story of one brother with details about the whole family included.

I had actually read all six of these books before. But I really enjoyed them all together like this. It helps the stories appear more seamless and keeps the details more organized in my mind. Obviously there are some books that I liked better, but I enjoyed all of them. The ladies did a great job of getting the feel for the characters to match up in each book. It's a fun, romantic read that will appeal to fans of historical romance. I will be keeping this book and getting rid of my six individual books.

The Princess and the Pig

The Princess and the Pig
Jonathan Emmett

A farmer is traveling home and stops in the shade of a castle with his baby piglet in the back of the cart. When a baby is dropped into the cart and the pig flies up into the baby bed. Both the farmer and the queen are astonished, but blame it on the fairies they've read about in books.

I absolutely love this book. It's one of my favorite children's books. I picked it up at a book fair last year and have read it to my children so often that the pages are already becoming worn. The writing is comical and mocks the common fairy tales we've read so often. The illustrator matched the pictures perfectly with the story and feel the author was going for. I won't spoil the ending, but it makes us laugh every time. Definitely a keeper.

Owl Moon

Owl Moon
Jan Yolen

A little girl goes hunting in the dark of night with her father. They go deep into the woods, hoping for a glimpse of an owl. She stays quiet as her father calls to the owl.

Lyrical sentences and colorful illustrations make this one of my new favorite children's books. My children enjoy it as much as I do. The slight rhyming pattern to the words make it a very easy book to read. The descriptions of the world around the child help the reader visualize the hike as they go owl hunting. We will definitely be keeping and sharing this book.

GQ GQ Where Are You?

GQ GQ Where Are You?
Adventures of a Gambel's Quail
Shaon I. Ritt

Gregory, often called GQ, is a little Gambel's quail that lives in the dessert. Follow the little quail as he travels through the dessert seeing plants and other animals. The book comes complete with a music cd and is packed full of information about the Gamel's quail and the dessert it lives in. It also has pages of extra activities for home and school. The book would be excellent for use in a school/home school setting.

All of the learning aspects aside, my children loved this book. The rhyming words and colorful illustrations captured their attention and had them asking me to read it over and over. They also enjoyed the sing-a-long cd that came with the book. This book is definitely a keeper.

The Dawn of Christmas

The Dawn of Christmas
The Apple Ridge Series Book 3
Cindy Woodsmall

Sadie was burned several years ago when she walked in on her fiance in the arms of her cousin on her wedding day. She vows never to marry and begins to pursue mission work in a town far away from her family. But circumstances bring her home and she is beginning to feel smothered with all of the match making. After rescuing a charming man, they hatch a plan to get the match makers off their backs until they can both get on with the plans they've made. But plans are meant to be changed.

I enjoyed this story. The different aspects that brought it all together made it different than I'd expected. It was nice to learn a bit more about the characters from the previous two books and have it all tie together so nicely in the third book. The relationship between the two main characters was funny, sweet, and romantic. The author did a great job. I hope she writes some more about this community.

The Christmas Singing

The Sound of Sleigh Bells
Apple Ridge Series Book 1
Cindy Woodsmall

Beth works with her Aunt Lizzy at their general store. She seems unable to move on after the death of her fiance and her aunt is concerned. Noticing her fascination with a wood carving she sets out to find the carver. Beth is drowning in guilt and sorrow and is unappreciative of her aunts meddling. Can she find the forgiveness to respond when the carver writes to her? Can she move beyond the darkness to find love and peace again?

The plot was slightly predictable, but still fun and enjoyable. The romance was sweet and the family's love for each other was touching. The characters, while flawed, were engaging and entertaining. The message of forgiveness and redemption was subtle, but uplifting. I enjoyed the story and look forward to more books by this author.

Christmas in Apple Ridge

Christmas in Apple Ridge
Cindy Woodsmall

The three books from The Apple Ridge series are all put together to make a three-in-one collection. Since each book is also a stand alone I'm going to only review the aspects of them being together and will refer you to my individual reviews since I've previously reviewed the first two and will write a separate review for the third one.

I enjoyed having all three of these books together. It made it easier for me to speed through the books and gave me a better sense of the community. Reading each book separately might leave time in between for me to forget some of the details. Woodsmall is about the only Amish fiction author I will read. Her down to earth characters and intriguing sense of style make this genre, that I typically don't enjoy, an enjoyable read. She always keeps me coming back for more. It was nice to read the new book in the series and to refresh my memory with the previous two books.

A Special Gift for Grammy

A Special Gift for Grammy
Jean George

Hunter collects stones while at his Grammy's house for a visit. Grammy isn't sure what to do with the pile of stones. Hunter tells her to do what everyone does with stones. So Grammy waits. Soon she finds that everyone does have a use for her pile of stones. Hunter returns to find his pile greatly diminished. Grammy takes him on a walk to find a purpose for the last few stones. It's a story of a very special relationship between a grandmother and her grandchild. Imagination and creativity are showcased in this fun little story about all of the different things can be done with a pile of rocks. The illustrations are done in a colored pencil look that will help tell the story with tons of color and inspiration. Children will love the family feel. Discussions about imagination, creativity, and family love will follow reading this book. The story book will make a great addition to the family library.

A Boy Called Duct Tape

A Boy Called Duct Tape
Christopher Cloud

A poor young boy, Pablo, and his little sister Pia found a gold coin in the river. Add a treasure map, a cave, bad guys, and lots of fun. What happens next is a wild adventure that none of them expected in their wildest dreams. At the end, they learn that no amount of money, adventure, and excitement can change who they really are.

I'm definitely not in the target age group for this book. But I still enjoyed following the kids on their adventure. There is enough suspense and drama to make this a great book for my son when he gets a little bit bigger. I'll definitely be keeping it.

My Life With Snoopy

My Life With Snoopy
How One Shelter Dog's Love Changed a Man's Life and Other Tails of Adventures
Joey Camen

Snoopy is written in the first person view of the dog owner. The story is also a about the author and his experiences with dogs before he became the owner of Snoopy. So it reads more like a journal than a novel. Each story does, however, relate in some way to the dog that changed the authors life.

The story was sweet and simple. It is very clear from the beginning that this is the author's personal view of how the dog effected his life. The beginning and middle parts of the book are light and fun. But the end, when the dog is getting older, are written more as a therapeutic work for the author. The author is still grieving for his pet and this comes through very clearly in the writing. So be prepared for some tears if you are an animal lover.

A Lady Most Lovely

A Lady Most Lovely
Love's Grace Trilogy Book 2
Jennifer Delamere

Margaret is one of the wealthiest young women in London. She's in town to find a husband. Her fiance Paul is another wealthy titled person and the local gossip is talking about the wedding of the year for the perfect couple. Mr. Tom Poole is a wealthy man, but comes from a poor family. He earned his wealth in the gold mines of Australia. The ton is reluctant to accept him, but his wealth is apparently speaking for them. When Margaret finds herself in a bind she learns who she can really depend on.

The characters are real, flawed, and fun to read about. I was a little nervous reading the second book in the series. But the book can be read as a stand-alone. There are definite mentions to the previous story, but I wasn't once left feeling lost or confused. It did, however, make me find the first book so I could read it as well. I didn't realize the book was Christian fiction until I had read a bit into the book. There are very subtle references that some might not even pick up on. So for the person who might normally stray away from CF, I would recommend giving this book a try. It certainly isn't preachy or in your face. I, personally, would have preferred more of a Christian feel since the book was labeled as such, but it was a great book that I will be keeping. The author does a great job of engaging the reader.

Rules of Murder

Rules of Murder
Julianna Deering

Drew and his best friend love reading mysteries. So when a person dies on Drew's property during a huge party, they decide to help the police investigate. But when the murder hits closer to home it becomes harder to separate the fact from fiction. Murder isn't fun when it's personal.

I could not put this book down. Stayed up really late finishing it. I really enjoyed the style of writing, the way the author wove the styles and thoughts of famous mystery writers into the story. I don't read a lot of mysteries so this had some pros and cons for me. The clues were perfectly misleading at times, which makes the book fun. I didn't figure out the story until very close to the end. I will admit that the small bit of romance thrown in was weak and not my favorite part. But I read a lot more romance than I do mystery so this was a really nice change and I focused on the who-done-it part instead. Die hard fans of mystery might find this a bit bland. But it made a welcome change from my typical genre and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely be keeping this author on my radar.

Little Book of Great Dates

Little Book of Great Dates
Dr. Greg & Erin Smalley

A cute little leather book filled with creative and fun ideas for dates to enhance your marriage. Use the book to have one date a month for a year, or jump around in the book to fit the date to the occasion. Each date chapter begins with a story, then has the list of activities that fit with the subject. At the end of the list is some questions to ask your spouse at the end of the date.

The ideas were fun. Not all of them will apply to every person, but there are enough in each chapter that everyone will be able to find something to fit their style. The questions were prompt deeper intimacy and will help you learn more about the one you love the most. The authors shared their own stories which gave it a more personal feel and helped to bring across some important points. I also liked the pretty blue cover. It added a nice touch. I really enjoyed this and look forward to going on these dates with my husband.

What Once Was Lost

What Once Was Lost
Kim Vogel Sawyer

Christina has taken over the poor farm when her father died. It's the only life she's ever known and she feels a sense of value with her life work. But when a fire destroys the kitchen the residents are displaced among the towns people. One of her favorite charges goes to a reclusive saw mill owner. The next few months are filled with faith testing experiences. Christina is shown that maybe her plans aren't necessarily God's plans.

The characters in this story were well defined and fun to spend time with. The message of salvation and Christ's love was an integral part and woven throughout the book. The middle of the plot seemed to drag a bit with very little leading to a conclusion. It was also a bit dark and sad in the middle. But then the story picked up and wrapped up well. I like a bit more romance in the story. The ending seemed to be a bit much considering the amount of time the couple spent together throughout the book. This was a good book, but not a favorite for me personally. I enjoyed the writing style though so will be checking out this author's other books.

Worship Walk

Worship Walk
Where Worship and Life Intersect
Gareth J. Goossen

Worship is more than just showing up for church and singing some songs. It is a complete life experience. The author takes us through the steps to make worship a constant part of our lives. He uses his own experiences to explain his points. Each chapter ends with questions that can be used for a small group Bible study or further personal style.

Worship is a subject that people often overlook or gloss over. The author has taken it to a deep and personal level. I really enjoyed the in-depth chapters, questions, and the stories that he wove into the message. The points that he brought out were thought provoking and convicting. This is definitely a book that I would recommend to someone wanting to deepen their worship experience.

Beloved

Beloved
Where the Heart Lives
Robin Lee Hatcher

Diana's life has been a strange mix of ups and downs. She was orphaned at six years old and sent on the orphan train. Loving parents adopted her and gave her a new life. While still a teenager Diana fell in love with Tyson Applegate, the son of a very wealthy and influential man. But it isn't long before Diana finds out that Tyson married her to make his father angry and gain control of his inheritance. She is soon abandoned as Tyson leaves with no intention of returning. Years later, thinking he is dead, she agrees to marry another man. Tyson shows up at her engagement party wanting to reconcile. Diana isn't really ready to give Tyson another chance, but finds herself with very little choices.

I really enjoyed this book. The author did a great job of telling a love story and weaving God's love for us throughout. There were romantic, suspenseful, and spiritual aspects to this book. The humorous elements were a bonus. It all added up to make a very enjoyable read. I will definitely be checking out other books by this author.

No Excuses

3 Off the Tee: No Excuses
The Fit Mind-Fit Bod Strategy Book
Lorii Myers

Life should be approached, like golf, as it every day is a new round. Using strategy from the game of gold, the author takes the reader on a path to becoming more physically fit and active.

My husband enjoys golf, so I figured I'd be able to understand the references and would enjoy the physical fitness aspect. The concept was great. But I'm not sure if I got bogged down with the golf references I didn't really understand or it was the format of the book. It was difficult for me to read and even harder for me to apply. I think the book would be great for a person who is very fond of the game and wants to up their fitness level. But it really wasn't my type of book.

Experiencing God at Home

Experiencing God at Home Day-By-Day
A Family Devotional
Tom Blackaby & Rick Osborne

This little devotional is designed for the family devotions. It would work well for those who already have this practice in place and would also be perfect for the family trying to establish this routine. The devotions are set up so that families can pick and choose what they are going to use that day based on the age of the child.  It begins with the scripture for the day and a question to get the discussions going. The devotional is based on the first two and is followed by prayer time and quiet time sections. There are several different ways to read through the devotions and a quick chapter at the beginning explains the way the authors set the book up.

I really enjoyed reading this and I'm looking forward to sharing it with the kids. The topics will interest them even though they are young, but we can still use this again when they are a bit older. The authors bring out several great points about establishing the habit of daily devotions and the effects it has on the children. The subjects are relevant to families today and are well thought out.  My favorite part is the little devotions called Parent Connection that are the devotionals just for parents. I've enjoyed everything I've read in this series and this one didn't disappoint. It's a book I'll be adding to my library.

10 Great Dates

10 Great Dates
Connecting Faith, Love & Marriage
Peter & Heather Larson
David & Claudia Arp

There are a ton of books out there about Christian marriages. But this book takes the couple on a path using dates to reconnect the marriage spiritually. When the stresses and daily grind of life happens, a couple can find themselves drifting slowly apart. Then as they age, their differences seem to become insurmountable. The authors wrote this book to bring the couple together again (or to be used as the marriage is starting) while connecting their faith. The end result will be a powerful couple for Christ.
There are tear-outs at the back of the book to be used on the dates.

I enjoyed reading the stories throughout each chapter. They did a great job of illustrating the points. The chapter discusses the topic that will be used on the date. At the end of the chapter are the instructions for each couple do do to prepare for their date. The dates is a bit of a misnomer. These are really just some quiet time set aside to talk about the chapter and to answer the questions from the tear-out pages.
My only reservation would be length of the chapters. It's going to take both people being completely committed to doing these dates. And I know several people that would love the idea, but would balk at reading that much each week in addition to the dates.

Pete the Cat

Pete the Cat
The Wheels on the Bus
James Dean

Pete the Cat is driving a bus for all of the little kittens and one small dog. Following the same rhyming pattern of the popular children's song, the book takes the reader on a journey through a day of sounds with Pete the cat. The book is written to follow the song, so is not written as a story. Young readers will enjoy the rhyming patterns that can be either read or sung. The illustrator has filled each page with color and helps to bring the story alive. The different fonts make the writing stand out on the brightly colored pages. The simplistic illustrations will appeal to the young reader's eyes. It could help little singers develop an interest in reading. Young fans of Pete the cat will love this book and want to add it to their favorites. My children hadn't heard of Pete the cat books yet, but still enjoyed the illustrations and lyrical wording.

All of Me That You Can't See

All of Me That You Can't See
Callie Grant

When you look in the mirror what do you see? Colorful illustrations and fun rhythmic words help children see that inside of them is something far more important than what they can see in the mirror. The words describe how our minds, heart, and love reside inside our bodies where we can't see them. And it also talks about how we can use the things we can't see to show others about our love for God.

My children really enjoyed the illustrations and were able to easily relate to the words. The message is beautiful and the presentation is superb. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone with young children.

The Note II

The Note II
Angela Hunt

Peyton receives a letter one day that helps to change her prospective on life. She goes to meet the letter writer and finds the meeting to be unsettling and confusing. Can she juggle her new found daughter and boyfriend without hurting someone? Could it be possible that her approach to love is all wrong? Take a short journey with Peyton as she discovers what love is really about.

I have not read the first book or watched the movie (or movies). So I started the book feeling a little confused. The style of writing felt more like a movie than the author's typical style of writing. Other reviewers also mentioned that it felt more like reading a screen play than reading a novel. Perhaps this might have contributed to the unrealistic feel that the entire book left me with. The secondary story of the older woman was intriguing, but has definitely been done before. While I enjoyed the story for the most part, it didn't leave me with the desire to go back and check out the first book.

Fired Up

Fired Up
Trouble in Texas Book 2
Mary Connealy

Glynna has just lost her husband. It certainly isn't a huge loss in her book. She's very thankful to be rid of the abusive, evil man. But now what is she supposed to do with two small children and a home that her husband stole from someone else? The Regulators are back again to rescue the downtrodden and oppressed.

I was really looking forward to this book after reading the first book in the series. Thankfully the author did not disappoint. The romance, mystery, and fun were all in the second book too. Since I read the first book it's harder for me to judge, but I feel this book can be read as a stand alone. But the first book is great, so I highly recommend reading it first. The characters are so fun and realistic. The plot has lots of action and keeps you wondering what will come next. Another home run by Mary Connealy that keeps her on my favorite author list.

Winter In Full Bloom

Winter In Full Bloom
Anita Higman

Lily and her mother have never gotten along. After a ten year hiatus, Lily returns home to try reconcile with her mother. She's feeling the effects of an empty nest and hopes that she can somehow reconnect. But her mother drops a bomb shell that sends her half way around the world to Australia. Can Lily find who she's looking for and still have a second chance at love?

This book was a mixed bag for me. I'm not a huge fan of overly emotional books and this one was definitely full of drama and emotion. The romantic part of the book was sweet and well done. The plot was a good one. And looking back after reading the story I can honestly say that I enjoyed it and it was a fast read. But quite a few circumstances in the book felt unbelievable and either rushed or forced. It was just a little too unrealistic in places for me.
In summary, it was a good book, just not my style.

Experiencing God's Presence

Experiencing God's Presence
Learning to Listen While You Pray
Linda Evans Shepherd

If you had a conversation with God, but never listened to what He had to say back would you really be conversing? The logical answer is that we need to listen as much as we talk. The author has taken this and written a book about how to listen better when praying. Filled with scripture and probing questions, it takes the reader on a journey that will change and revolutionize their prayer life.
Each chapter begins with a quote or scripture. The author then presents her thoughts on prayer with a clear, concise and easy to read manner. A prayer, several questions, and a section called "Making It Personal" are included at the end of each chapter.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author was able to present facts and scripture without it being too dry. The message was beautiful and so relevant to today. The book will be an added bonus to any Bible study or devotional time. I will definitely be keeping this book and highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their prayer life.

Show Me Space

Show Me Space
My First Picture Encyclopedia Series
Steve Kortenkamp

Plants, solar systems, moons, and galaxies are just a few of the more than one hundred facts in this fun picture encyclopedia. Each page is filled with bright, colorful photographs and illustrations. The large font and phonetic assistance will have children enjoying the experience of reading all about space. The easy to read page set up will give children confidence in reading while also teaching them all about our solar system. The last page has lists with more books and websites that will help aid the reader in finding more information about space and the places beyond our planet. This book would work well in a school setting. The students would love learning with the fun layout of the book and the teacher would appreciate the facts and additional information provided. My son really enjoyed reading this book and it opened up several further discussions about the space beyond our world.
