Sawyer is on his way through Blue River, Texas when he's shot. It's dark and snowy and he can't see who fired the shot. He had agreed to come be a temporary marshal. So his first day in town isn't very promising. Arriving at the local school house he loses consciousnesses from the blood loss. Piper, the single school teacher, isn't exactly thrilled to be saddled with this bleeding man. She knows her reputation will be ruined if she takes him into her home. But she can't exactly leave him in the snow, bleeding to death.
The characters were fun and enjoyable. I haven't read anything by this author before and was pleasantly surprised. The additional characters also add depth to the story. I wouldn't mind reading another book about several of them. There are a few loose threads that aren't followed through at the end or in the epilogue, but it didn't really bother me. The story ended well, but left some openings for another book about the family.
