Back In Her Husband's Arms

Back In Her Husband's Arms
Susanne Hampton
After a whirlwind romance Sara and Tom get married. But they failed to discuss children before they tied the knot. Sara desperately wanted children and Tom refused to even consider them. And he wouldn't tell her why. So Sara leaves. She's spent her entire life being pushed around by other people and she refuses to give up her dream. Three years later she takes a temporary job to help a friend, and realizes it puts her working directly with her soon-to-be ex-husband.

The romantic aspects of this story were sweet and mostly uncomplicated. The main issue was resolved towards the end of the book, but there wasn't a lot of drama. The medical aspects were a plus in my book. I liked the story, but wasn't in love with it. Without giving a spoiler alert, the ending felt very rushed and forced. I felt that one of the main characters was pushed into changing their mind without any leading up to that point. But overall, it was a sweet story of reunited spouses that I enjoyed reading.

The Gift of the Other

The Gift of the Other
Andrew Shepherd
We live in a time where helping others is not popular. Unknown people are a potential threat. No one picks up hitchhikers or gives money to a homeless person. We are cautious and careful about who invite into our homes and lives. Yet the Bible talks to us about entertaining strangers and helping others.

The author has taken a subject that should touch the heart of every Christian and has written an entire theological book. I was unaware when I requested this book that it was part of the Princeton Theological Monograph Series. And as such, was mostly over my head. I enjoyed reading the parts that I understood. But most of the book was a bit much for me. This book is more for the pastor, professor, or scholar than for the average Christian hoping to learn more about hospitality and overcoming the fear of it. I did gain some insights, but the time it took me to plow through the extremely philosophical parts to get to those insights was somewhat tedious.

The Bridge Tender

The Bridge Tender
Marybeth Whalen
Emily is left devastated and heartbroken when her husband passes away from cancer. But before his death he left her with a strange request and the means to fulfill it. He wants her to purchase a summer house on "their" island. It was their dream and he wants her to go ahead and fulfill it, even though he's gone. Emily finally makes the trip, a year after his death. What she finds on the island goes way beyond a house. She finds healing and a community to belong to.

I've been a fan of this author after I picked up her first book several years ago. Her stories are sweet, even when sad. Beautiful, even when there is tragedy. The imagery alone is worth the read, but the spiritual messages and romance that are woven into the story make it one that is heartwarming as well as convicting. I lived for eight years on the coast of NC and the author does an excellent job of capturing the essence of living on the outer banks. I can't wait to read her next book.

Maker Dad

Maker Dad
Lunch Box guitars, Antigravity Jars, and 22 Other Incredibly Cool Father-Daughter DIY Projects
Mark Frauenfelder
Sons aren't the only ones who like to spend time making things with their dads. The author has created an interactive book that daddy/daughter teams can use to make projects together. The projects range from easy and quick to challenging. While the title implies it's for dads, moms with some decent diy skills will enjoy this book as well.

The pictures in the book are bright, colorful, and very informative. I was impressed with the amount of instructional photographs and graphics. The projects all sounded fun, but I would warn any parents away who don't already have some diy skills. Most of these looked a bit above my level. But my husband could easily handle them all and I know that both my son and daughter will enjoy working on them.

All Right Here

All Right Here
The Darlings Book 1
Carre Armstrong Gardner
Ivy Darling can't have children. She wants to pursue adoption, but her husband is not cooperating. But one day three children are abandoned by their mother and Ivy takes them in. Her husband, Nick reluctantly agrees. But as the one year anniversary of their placement into the Darling family approaches, Nick realizes that his distance and reluctance may have pushed away the very family he now wants.

I'm not usually a fan of family sagas. But this story was charming. It grew on me more and more as I turned the pages, until I found myself completely immersed. There are some serious issues that are brought out in the story. But the author handles them with finesse and love. A true picture of what family is supposed to be, scares and all, emerges as the story unfolds. I'm sure this book will be great as a stand alone book, but I'm definitely looking forward to reading more about this Darling family.

Undetected

Undetected
Dee Henderson
Gina is a genius, which often equates with loneliness. After a failed relationship she heads to her brother's house to wait for him to return home. He works on a submarine for the US Navy. Gina has decided she wants to be married, despite her past track record with men. So she hopes that her brother will help her find a great guy. But when Daniel and Mark both seem like perfect choices she can't make a decision about either of them. Combine this with the potential volatile information she's just uncovered about sonar and she is one stressed woman. But God has been there for everything in the past. So she knows He'll guide her through this chaotic time as well.

Combine suspense, romance, and military drama and you have Undetected. The plot is full of technical details, yet I never felt lost or confused. The author did a great job of making the story seem authentic without overwhelming the reader with hard to understand information. The romance was sweet, clean, and heartwarming. It was woven throughout the entire story, but it wasn't over powering or overshadowed the plot. There are definitely elements of the main character's faith in the story. It is clear they are Christians, but the references are in relation to the characters and their lives so it doesn't feel preachy or over done. Dee Henderson is one of my all time favorite authors and she's definitely written another winner.
